Mayor making ceremony postponed after Mike Leddy taken ill

🕔16.May 2013

Birmingham’s annual city council meeting and mayor making ceremony has been postponed because Lord Mayor-elect Mike Leddy is in hospital and unable to take the oath of office.

The 63-year-old Labour councillor has not recovered after being taken ill while on holiday in New Zealand earlier this year.

Cllr Leddy was to have become Lord Mayor on May 21 in a glittering civic occasion.

The annual meeting of the council has been re-arranged for June 11 when it is hoped Cllr Leddy will have left hospital in Birmingham and recovered sufficiently to take office.

A council spokeswoman said: “The annual meeting of the city council, which includes the election of the Lord Mayor, due to take place on Tuesday 21 May 2013 will be postponed until the next scheduled meeting of the full council on Tuesday 11 June 2013.

“Lord Mayor-elect, Cllr Mike Leddy, is currently in hospital in Birmingham undergoing treatment for a recurring condition, which flared up while he was on holiday in New Zealand earlier this year.

“Cllr Leddy is expected to be out of hospital next week but he needs a short period of time to recover fully. Therefore, it was considered the wisest course of action to postpone the mayor-making until next month.

“The Lord Mayor’s Show will continue as planned in Birmingham city centre on Bank Holiday Monday, 27 May 2013, with the current Lord Mayor, Cllr John Lines, presiding over events. Cllr Lines will continue as Lord Mayor until 11 June 2013.”

Cllr Leddy told Chamberlain files when nominated for the mayoralty that the honour was his greatest wish come true. Born and bred in Lozells, the passionate Brummie said he would be prepared to abseil down the BT Tower or carry out a parachute jump to raise money for charity.

His colleagues have become increasingly worried about his health in recent weeks, but had hoped Cllr Leddy would be fit enough to make his big day on May 21.
