Centre for Cities: Should shadow mayors be left out in the dark?.

Rachel Smith of think tank the Centre for Cities, a long-time advocate of elected mayors, reflects on the agonising of many over the prospect of shadow mayors.

As it currently stands, the Localism Bill may well create a scenario in Birmingham whereby current incumbent Mike Whitby, the Tory leader who heads an increasingly strained ruling Lib Dem – Con coalition, could lose power next May, but continue as shadow mayor for anither year.

But, as Rachel points out:

The issue of shadow mayors is only a side show to the main policy: the potential of mayors to make a difference to cities
